When I get better

This is my draft of a children's book for kids going through cancer treatment or any kind of illness. For Sean and Lucas.

When I get better, my doctor will smile
she’ll pat my leg and say, “We won’t see you for a while.”
she’ll say I’ve done great, which I already know
and she’ll make sure I give her “5” before I go.

When I get better, there will be no more shots
and I’ll stop shivering even though I feel hot
my bruises will heal and my hair will grow back
I’ll be stronger than ever – and that is a fact.

When I get better, I’ll leap from my bed
I’ll turn lots of cartwheels and stand on my head
I’ll wave to the nurses and say, “See you later!”
and skip all the way to the hospital’s elevator.

When I get better, we’ll go to a restaurant
I’ll sit there all day and eat whatever I want
I’ll eat pizza and fish and French fries, too
and a huge hot fudge sundae as soon as I’m through.

When I get better, I’ll run in the sand
I’ll wade in the surf while I hold my dad’s hand
I’ll soak up the sun and dance to a band
and I’ll swim and I’ll play ‘til I’m too tired to stand.

When I get better, I’ll go to the playground
I’ll climb on the monkey bars and swing upside down
I’ll greet all my friends who I really do miss
It will be so great – I can’t wait to do this!

When I get better, I’ll run in the grass
I’ll play catch with a football and go out for a pass
I’ll set up a game and invite everyone I know
I’ll play so well – I might even go pro.

When I get better, I’ll forget I felt bad
and hardly remember the rough times that I’ve had
I’ll think of how great I feel and clap really loud
I’m working hard to be better, so I’ll feel very proud.

I’ll do all this when I get better.
And I’ll be better really soon.
